Hundreds Bike to Work with E's

Snohomish County, Wash. – Nine hundred people tried a two-wheeled commute on May 15 as Snohomish County and Bothell residents and workers celebrated a sunny Bike to Work Day, sponsored by Community Transit and Everett Transit.

Regular and first-time cyclists were encouraged to stop by one of seven “celebration stations” in the north end on Friday morning. Bike to Work was also celebrated Friday in King County and throughout the country. More than 800 people on 146 teams have committed to continue biking to work at least once a week through June 12 in the Snohomish County Bike Commute Challenge presented by Group Health. Commute Challenge registration remains open through May 25.

Bike Commute Challenge May 11-June 12

There's still plenty of time to bike to work five times by June 12 (and to count bike commutes completed since May 11), so people can still join or form teams through May 25. For help finding teammates, post to our Message Board.

The Challenge is to change your habits and give healthy commuting a try, and for experienced bike commuters to encourage newbies to join them. Take it one step (or one pedal stroke) at a time by first finding or organizing a team and committing to bike to work just one day a week. You could end up winning a great prize, and loving a new way to get to around.

Take a look at our Commuter Tips page for information on getting started on a healthy commute.

Get Your Team in Gear:
  • Ask around. There are plenty of people who live close to work or transit and just need a little encouragement to try bike commuting. Teams of co-workers are most common, but teams might also consist of friends who commute to different locations. Participants must live in or commute to a worksite in Snohomish County or Bothell.
  • Individuals looking for teams and teams looking for members can visit the Snohomish County Bike To Work Message Board hosted by B.I.K.E.S Club of Snohomish County.
  • Get at least 4 people, but no more than 10. If your team gets big, just split into two and enjoy the extra competition.
  • Pick a team name. Be creative and “wheely” clever.
  • Team captains earn an event t-shirt

  • Appoint a Team Captain. The captain’s job is motivation and a little internet “paperwork.” You’ll register all members on-line and make sure their miles get entered each week.
  • Dream big. Set some team goals or challenge another department or company. Help people plan their routes and gear. Plan to bike together on Bike to Work Day or to share a snack break or lunch that day. Ask for support from your manager or your company’s Wellness or Commute Trip Reduction program staff.
Rules & Stuff
  • The “Challenge” is to bike to work at least five roundtrips (10-one-way trips) May 11-June 12.
  • Biking to school counts, too (it's the "work" kids do, after all!)
  • Participants must live in or commute to a worksite in Snohomish County or Bothell.
  • Last day to add or delete team members is May 25.
  • To be eligible for team prizes, teams must have 4-10 members. No more, no less. For help finding members, join Yahoo Groups and post something on our Bike to Work Message Board.
  • Combining biking with busing or vanpooling or driving part way is encouraged – but only self-propelled miles on two wheels count towards the challenge statistics.
  • This is a “commute” challenge, so only miles to work or school count. Now, if you bike instead of drive to a work meeting, or bike to the store on your way home from work, you can count those miles. If you bike the LONG, scenic way home just for fun, kudos to you, but you really should just count the usual commute miles, not the extras.
  • If you work a split shift and therefore bike four trips a day, you can count all the day’s miles, but only a maximum of two trips per day (one roundtrip).
  • If you work six days a week and bike that extra day, by all means count those trips (max 12 one-way trips per week).
  • All trips and miles are on the honor system, though we may check in with teams or individuals if things seem out of whack.
