Trip Planner Help


You can use the Trip Planner to plan your bus or train travels in Snohomish, King and Pierce counties. The Trip Planner includes schedule information for Community Transit, Everett Transit, King County Metro, Sound Transit, Pierce Transit, Seattle Monorail and the South Lake Union Streetcar as well as Washington State Ferry connections.

Island Transit and Skagit Transit information is not included in the regional Trip Planner. See the "Connecting Services" page for contact information.

Trip Planner itineraries are estimates based on the vehicle's average speed and the distance between major stops. Please plan to arrive at your stop at least 5 minutes early. Service may be affected by traffic, construction, accidents or weather conditions.

Trip Planning Tools
Plan a Trip:

Get a full itinerary for bus or train travel between locations. Your results will include bus route number and stop information, fares, how long the trip will take and how far you’ll have to walk. You may get several options and you’ll be able to compare travel time and transfers between trips.

Service Nearby:

Use this feature to find what bus routes serve stops in an area and where they go. Then you can link to the route schedule, plan a trip or find the next bus. Also provides a link to "Stop Info." This feature will list the closest stop for each route that comes within a mile of the location entered.

Nearest Stop:

Use this feature to find all the stops in an area, and to get more information on each stop. Also provides a link to "Stop Info." This feature lists all stops within a 10 mile radius of the location entered.

Next Bus:

Lists the next four trips on all routes that serve stops in a selected area. Based on schedule information; not real-time.

Bus Stop List:

Select a route and see a full list of all stops served in each direction. Each stop has a link to a PDF of the schedule posted there (Community Transit-managed stops only).

Advanced Features


More Options

These features are available by clicking the "More Options" button from the main "Plan a Trip" page.

Popular Landmarks:

Select a category of landmark to get a list of all such destinations in the region, such as "Colleges / Universities." Since landmarks in three counties (King, Pierce and Snohomish) are included, the lists are long. Use the scroll bar to see all your choices. Once you find the landmark you want, click on it to select it as either your "Start" or "End" location. You can use the tool twice to pick one landmark for "Start" and a different landmark – even in a different category - for "End."

Note that some landmark names are shown in full as well as in abbreviated form. Don’t worry if you don’t know what "LTC" stands for (Lynnwood Transit Center). Just ignore our alphabet soup for now - we’re working on simplifying and expanding these landmark lists.

Mode Preference:

If you want to take your trip on a particular mode (like Swift or Sounder) or start or end with a certain bus route, you can narrow the options the Trip Planner will consider. This feature works best if you already know what routes serve your "Start" and "End" location. If you get a "trip not possible" message, click "Revise Entries" and change your "Travel Preference" back to "All" for the best chance of success.

Secondary Tools

These features are accessible from within the other tools.

Stop Info:

This option is displayed once you’ve selected a location in the "Service Nearby" and "Nearest Stop" tools. "Stop Info" lists the routes that serve the stop, describes where the stop is located on the street and links to a PDF of the schedule posted at the stop (PDFs are available for Community Transit-managed stops only).

All Trips:

If you plan a trip that has direct service (on one bus route) between your "Start" and "End" location, you will see the "All Trips" link in the itinerary. Use this to see the full daily schedule of all routes that make a direct trip between your two points. You can select which bus routes you want to appear on this personalized "point-to-point" schedule.

Maps:

When you successfully "Plan a Trip," you can now click to see a map of the trip from start to finish in the "Trip Results" section. At the bottom of each trip option description is a link to a map of that trip. The map opens to show the full trip routing. Map features:

  • Zoom in using the magnifying glass icon to see more street detail. You can even use aerial and "bird's eye" view to study the area around your stop.
  • Show All Bus Stops marks all possible stops on this trip. Hover over the stop icon to see the stop name and location.
  • Print Map & Directions provides an easy-to-read, two-page printout.
  • Show Trip Details provides a summary of your trip.

Entering Locations


The Trip Planner recognizes four types of locations: Addresses, Intersections, Landmarks and Community Transit Bus Stop IDs. The following tips will help you enter in locations that the Trip Planner can easily recognize as one of these valid location types.

Addresses
  • Do NOT type in the City, State or Zip
  • You do not need to type in "Ave","St",etc. The trip planner will automatically bring up options for you choose from.
    • CORRECT: 7100 Hardeson
    • INCORRECT: 7100 Harderson St. Everett, Wa.
  • Some streets and addresses are unknown to the Trip Planner. You may need to enter another nearby location, such as an intersection or a landmark.
  • If you are unfamilliar with the area, you can simply type in the name of the city you are going to and list of landmarks will be automatically generated for you.
  • You don't need to type in the directional designations for streets, but if a direction name is part of a street name, you should include it.
    • CORRECT: 3330 164th, 16300 North Road
    • INCORRECT: 3330 164th Southwest
Intersections
  • Type the "&" symbol or the word "and" between two street names to show an intersection.
  • You don't need to type in the city. The Trip Planner shows the possible city names as options if needed.
    • CORRECT: Evergreen and Casino - or - Evergreen & Casino
    • INCORRECT: Evergreen and Casino Everett
  • You don't need to type in the directional designations for streets, but if a direction name is part of a street name, you should include it.
    • CORRECT: 3rd & Main
    • INCORRECT: 3rd S & S Main
    • CORRECT: 34th & West Viewmont
    • INCORRECT: 34th W & West Viewmont Way W.
  • Some streets and addresses are unknown to the Trip Planner. You may need to enter another nearby location, such as an intersection or a landmark.
  • If you are unfamilliar with the area, you can simply type in the name of the city you are going to and list of landmarks will be automatically generated for you.
Landmarks

The Trip Planner recognizes many landmarks. "Popular Landmarks" are listed in the "More Options" section of the "Plan a Trip" page. Using a landmark as a location can be a very efficient way of planning a trip as many bus routes have been designed to cater to these locations. The regional landmarks include the following landmark types:

  • City / Local Government
  • Colleges / Universities
  • High Schools, elementary and junior highs
  • Hospitals
  • Major Shopping Centers
  • Museums
  • Parks and Recreation Areas
  • Senior / Youth Centers
  • Sports Stadiums
  • State Government
  • Swift Stations
  • Transit Centers / Facilities
Bus Stop ID
Every Community Transit bus stop has a unique identification number (Bus Stop ID) assigned to it. The number is posted on the bus stop sign post facing the street and on the bus schedule posted at the stop. Bus Stop ID numbers are also shown whenever a stop is listed by street names in any Trip Planner Tool.

You can use Bus Stop ID numbers as locations in any of the Trip Planner Tools. Knowing the ID number for your stop(s) can be a fast and easy way to get results in the Trip Planner. The number is also helpful when calling Cusomter Information for trip planning help or to report a problem at a stop.

Trip Planning Tips


When do you want to travel?
Travel now:

The current date and time are automatically filled in when you visit the Trip Planner page. If you are ready to take your trip now and you want to catch the earliest bus or train, use the current time.

Travel later:

Or, if you want to take your trip at a specific time, check the "Depart after" radio button and choose the time you want using the drop-down menus. You can plan a trip up to two weeks in advance. If you would like to arrive at your destination at a specific time, check the "Arrive by" radio button and choose a different time.

Trip Preferences (optional)

You can request the trip that is the fastest, has the fewest transfers or requires the least walking. You can also specify how far you are willing to walk (down to ¼ mile). The Trip Planner on the homepage assumes you want the fastest trip and can walk up to 1 mile to give you the most trip options.

Getting the best trip options

If you are not satisfied with the trip options provided, try adjusting the time of your trip by a few minutes earlier or later. Or, try slightly different locations that might have more bus service or from which you could carpool or be picked up.

No results? Bad options? There may not be service running at the time or day you specified. (Most bus lines have less-frequent service late at night and on weekends.) If possible, try planning your trip with a different time or from a nearby transit center or park & ride. Select "More Options" from the "Plan a Trip" form to get a list of "Popular Landmarks," that all have transit service nearby.
